2026 Elimu Scholarship: How to Apply & Tips for Needy Kenyan Students (2026)

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has launched an exciting opportunity for aspiring students: the 2026 Elimu Scholarship Programme. This initiative aims to support thousands of talented and vulnerable learners across all 47 counties, including those from refugee backgrounds in Kakuma, Kalobeyei, and Dadaab camps. The scholarship, facilitated by the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation (JKF), will provide a comprehensive educational experience for students entering senior school in 2026.

The scholarship criteria are designed to identify and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. To be eligible, applicants must have participated in the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) and achieved achievement levels ranging from 'Meeting Expectation' to 'Exceeding Expectation', corresponding to Levels 5 to 8. This applies to both boys and girls in public schools.

The government has also taken steps to ensure inclusivity. Students with special needs and disabilities will qualify regardless of their achievement level. Additionally, refugee students in the specified camps will be eligible if they meet specific academic criteria. Refugee boys must have scored Levels 5 to 8, while refugee girls who scored Level 4 (Approaching Expectation) or above are eligible.

Furthermore, the programme prioritizes learners from poor and vulnerable families. It includes categories such as orphans, children from urban informal settlements, learners with disabled parents or guardians, and those affected by HIV/AIDS or other chronic illnesses. Children experiencing extreme poverty, neglect, abuse, or living with disabilities are also eligible.

To apply, interested students can collect scholarship application forms from their nearest Sub-County Education office. Alternatively, forms can be downloaded from the Ministry of Education's website (www.education.go.ke) or the Jomo Kenyatta Foundation's website (www.jkf.co.ke). Online applications are also available at https://scholarship.jkf.co.ke.

It's important to note that completed forms must be submitted by December 23, 2025, at 5 pm. After the application window closes, shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews conducted by Community Selection Advisory Committees (CSACs).

The scholarship will cover various expenses, including school fees, transportation to and from school, a school kit, and pocket money for the three-year education period. Additionally, students will receive mentorship and psychosocial support throughout their journey.

The MoE encourages the public to spread the word about this opportunity to ensure that as many eligible students as possible can apply. For any queries or complaints, applicants can reach out through the toll-free helpline or official email contacts provided.
