Unveiling Ancient Art: Archaeologists Discover a Roman-Era Fresco of Jesus in Turkey
IZNIK, Turkey (AP) -- A remarkable archaeological discovery has shed new light on the early Christian era in Anatolia. In August, a team of archaeologists unearthed a stunning fresco depicting a Roman-looking Jesus as the "Good Shepherd" in an underground tomb near Iznik, a town in northwestern Turkey. This find holds significant historical value, as Iznik is renowned for its role in Christian history, particularly as the site of the Nicene Creed adoption in A.D. 325.
The fresco, believed to date back to the 3rd century, showcases a youthful, clean-shaven Jesus adorned in a toga, carrying a goat across his shoulders. This portrayal is particularly intriguing as it presents Jesus with distinctly Roman attributes, a rare occurrence in Anatolia during that period. The Good Shepherd motif, which predates the cross as a symbol of Christianity, signifies protection, salvation, and divine guidance, playing a crucial role in early Christian expression of faith.
Despite its centrality in early Christianity, the discovery of the Good Shepherd fresco in Anatolia is a significant one. The one found in Hisardere village is the best-preserved example, offering a glimpse into the artistic and religious practices of the time. The tomb's walls and ceiling are adorned with intricate bird and plant motifs, as well as portraits of noble men and women, accompanied by slave attendants, providing a comprehensive view of the era's cultural and social dynamics.
The excavation also revealed the skeletons of five individuals, including two young adults, a 6-month-old infant, and an undetermined age due to poor preservation.
