In a shocking incident that has stirred strong reactions, Jewish community leaders have voiced their outrage over an offensive graffiti attack on the office of federal Member of Parliament Andrew Hastie in Mandurah, Western Australia.
The defacement occurred shortly after Mr. Hastie publicly defended his endorsement of new legislation aimed at combatting hate groups, igniting a controversy that many are closely watching.
Upon arriving at work on Friday morning, staff members discovered the words "traitor goy" spray-painted prominently on the front of Mr. Hastie's electorate office. This derogatory term, as explained by Perth Hebrew Congregation's chief rabbi, Daniel Lieberman, has recently been used pejoratively against non-Jewish individuals perceived as overly supportive of Jewish communities.
Mr. Hastie's recent social media activity has drawn both attention and criticism. Just weeks prior, he had taken to platforms like Twitter to express his backing for new laws targeting hate speech, which were passed with bipartisan support from the Liberal party in mid-January. Initially, he had opposed Labor's proposed hate speech legislation, introduced in light of a tragic terror attack in Bondi, but he later shifted his stance and voted in favor of a revised version of the bill.
His decision to endorse the legislation sparked a torrent of disapproval on social media, with multiple followers labeling him a "sell-out" amidst a wave of dissenting comments.
Interestingly, Mr. Hastie, who serves as the Canning MP and was previously a frontbencher, has chosen not to comment on the graffiti incident itself.
Describing the graffiti as "disgusting," fellow federal Liberal MP and Jewish Australian Julian Leeser condemned the attack, asserting, "Andrew Hastie did the right thing in supporting laws aimed at expelling hate preachers and confronting radical Islamists and Neo-Nazis. I would have expected this to be a stance that resonates with all Australians." He firmly believes the graffiti is an intentional attack targeting Mr. Hastie for his advocacy on behalf of Jewish Australians and the broader community.
Rabbi Lieberman echoed these sentiments, highlighting that such acts of vilification are becoming increasingly common. He remarked, "The act of spray-painting Andrew Hastie's office sends a message suggesting that he is somehow under the influence of the Jewish community or acting out of alignment with national interests regarding this hate speech legislation. This reflects a troubling trend of vilification in our society. When individuals encounter differing opinions, it seems that some believe they have the right to resort to abuse and harassment. I find this behavior profoundly un-Australian."
The local police were alerted to the incident at Mr. Hastie's office on Friday morning, and the Western Australia Police have stated that investigations are currently underway. They are encouraging anyone with relevant information to reach out to Crime Stoppers.
