The verdict, delivered by a three-judge panel of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal on Monday, comes after prosecutors argued for the death penalty, citing the deaths of approximately 1,400 protesters and injuries to up to 25,000 others during weeks of unrest in 2024. This raises a critical question: Can a leader’s actions during political upheaval ever justify such extreme consequences?
Hasina faced five charges, including accusations of inciting the murder of protesters, ordering public hangings, and authorizing the use of lethal force, drones, and helicopters to quell the unrest. At 78, Hasina remains in self-imposed exile and did not appear in court. Her Awami League party has called for a nationwide shutdown in protest, sparking fears of renewed political instability ahead of February’s national elections.
