But here's where it gets intriguing: Patrick Ball and Alden Ehrenreich, both familiar faces from the screen, are set to debut on Broadway in Gina Gionfriddo's play 'Becky Shaw' at Second Stage's Hayes Theater. For those new to theater lingo, a Broadway debut means an actor's first appearance in a professional production on the famous Broadway strip in New York City – it's a big leap from films or TV, often seen as the pinnacle of stage acting.
Ball, whom you might recognize from his compelling performance as Dr. Frank Langdon in HBO's 'The Pitt' (which is ramping up for its second season release), will take on the role of Andrew. Ehrenreich, fresh off his intense work in Zach Cregger's film 'Weapons' alongside Josh Brolin, and after starring in hits like 'Cocaine Bear,' 'Oppenheimer,' and the Marvel series 'Ironheart,' will portray Max. Joining them is the acclaimed Linda Emond, a three-time Tony nominee who has dazzled in productions such as 'Death of a Salesman' directed by Mike Nichols, 'Cabaret' under Sam Mendes, and 'Life x 3' with John Turturro, Helen Hunt, and Brent Spiner.
Directed by Trip Cullman, 'Becky Shaw' tells the story of a disastrous blind date between Max and Beck that throws the lives of Max's pals Suzanna and Andrew into chaos. This revival is significant because the play first premiered Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theater in 2009 – for beginners, Off-Broadway refers to smaller theater productions outside the main Broadway district, often experimental or intimate – and it even earned a spot as a Pulitzer Prize finalist. That prestigious award recognizes outstanding writing in American drama, making this a high-stakes comeback.
Notably, this staging represents Gionfriddo's own Broadway introduction as a playwright. As for the remaining roles, Suzanna and Beck, announcements about their casting are expected soon. Ball is stepping into Broadway after his recent standout as Hamlet in Robert O’Hara's production at the Mark Taper Forum, showcasing his versatility. Ehrenreich, meanwhile, has just completed filming 'The Last Resort' with Daisy Ridley, adding another layer to his burgeoning career.
