Hempsted Recycling Centre Closure: What You Need to Know (2026)

Hempsted Household Recycling Centre to remain closed until after Easter for essential repairs

Gloucestershire County Council has announced that Hempsted Household Recycling Centre (HRC) will stay shut longer than initially planned next year, due to necessary repairs and improvements. The council had initially scheduled a January 2026 closure with a return by Easter, but subsequent assessments showed more groundwork is required on the landfill site, making an Easter reopening impractical during the centre’s peak period.

Councillor Martin Horwood apologized for any disruption this may cause local residents and reiterated that updated reopening dates will be shared as soon as they are confirmed.

The HRC site, operated by the council’s not-for-profit company Ubico, has been in operation since the 1990s and last received a major upgrade in 2019.

The council’s statement emphasizes that the improvements will enhance safety, sustainability, and ease of use. Planned upgrades include resurfaced areas, modern waste compactors powered by renewable energy, and a new reuse shop to repair and extend the life of items.

Additional enhancements include better protection for electrical waste and new electric vehicle charging points for service vehicles.

While Hempsted HRC is closed, residents can still use other county recycling centres, such as Pyke Quarry and Wingmoor Farm, which will be open seven days a week. Kerbside collections, bring banks, and bulky waste services remain available options for residents in the meantime.
