A brand-new £12.8 million urgent treatment centre (UTC) is set to open at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, revolutionizing patient care in the area. This state-of-the-art facility will not only enhance the healthcare experience but also address the growing demand for urgent medical attention. But here's where it gets controversial... While the new centre promises improved access to care, some argue that the funds could have been better allocated to other areas of the hospital, such as emergency departments or critical care units. The UTC will be a purpose-built, multi-story facility, designed to provide a range of services, including larger clinical rooms, a second storey for future expansion, and a dedicated space for the Medical Same Day Emergency Care (M-SDEC) unit. The funding for this project, part of the national New Hospital Programme (NHP), is a significant boost for the three hospitals in Leicester. University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) will receive a total of £50 million, with £39 million allocated for improvements across its three sites. This includes refurbishments, new laboratories, and training facilities, as well as the much-needed expansion of inpatient pharmacy services. At Leicester General Hospital, the East Midlands Planned Care Centre (EMPCC) will undergo a makeover, and the Hearing and Balance service will have a new home.
The Baldwin Lodge at Glenfield Hospital will be refurbished to accommodate occupational health teams, while the Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) will see a six-storey extension to the Windsor Building and refurbishment of spaces in the Victoria and Jarvis buildings. Services will be relocated from Knighton Street, and new laboratories for Immunology and Cytogenetics will be created. UHL chief executive Richard Mitchell expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the new UTC will reduce waiting times and improve patient experiences, paving the way for the main construction phase of the NHP in 2032.
