Prada's Big Move: Acquiring Versace at a Bargain Price (2025)

Prada Agrees to Acquire Versace, Intensifying Italy’s Luxury Power Play

In a move that deepens its hold on the luxury fashion scene, Prada confirmed on Tuesday that it has purchased Versace, uniting two iconic Italian houses under a single umbrella. The deal values Versace at about $1.38 billion (roughly £1.04 billion), a price notably lower than the roughly $2 billion Capri Holdings paid for the brand in 2018.

The acquisition broadens Prada’s already impressive brand portfolio, which includes Miu Miu, and sets the stage for stiffer competition with global luxury rivals. Chief among them is French giant LVMH, which owns Dior, Fendi, and Louis Vuitton, among others.

Versace’s leadership has recently undergone change. Donatella Versace stepped down as creative director in March after a 27-year tenure, guiding the label through its glamorous, logo-centric era anchored by the Medusa emblem. She assumed leadership in 1997 following the assassination of her brother Gianni Versace. Dario Vitale, formerly a design director at Miu Miu, has since taken over creative duties.

The sale comes at a period of slower Versace sales and a broader retreat by Capri Holdings from some of its other luxury brands, including Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo. As a result, Versace is being divested at a run-rate loss of around $700 million.

Under Capri Holdings, Versace shifted away from its hallmark ornate aesthetics toward a more minimalist vibe, a move that also included price increases.

Prada’s official one-line notice stated that the acquisition is now complete, with all necessary regulatory approvals secured.

Proceeds from the sale are earmarked to reduce debt at Capri Holdings, the former parent company of Versace. Capri’s CEO John D. Idol described the plan to use the funds to substantially strengthen Capri’s balance sheet.

Andrea Guerra, CEO of Prada, has previously signaled strong potential for Versace, describing the brand as having “huge potential.” He cautioned that realizing this potential will require a long, disciplined, and patient execution.

Thought-provoking takeaway: this deal underscores a broader trend in luxury where consolidation can redefine market leadership and pricing power. It also raises questions about how Versace’s design philosophy and Prada’s strategic priorities will converge in the coming years. Is the shift toward minimalist aesthetics compatible with Versace’s storied opulence, or will Prada steer Versace toward a new, hybrid identity that balances both worlds?
