The company has announced that due to supply chain disruptions, they are switching from sunflower oil to Australian-grown canola oil with antioxidants for their Red Rock Deli potato chips, Smith's Double Crunch potato chips, Sunbites Grain Waves and Crackers, and Australian-made Toobs. This change is intended to maintain the high quality and great taste that consumers love. However, some customers have noticed a difference, with some reporting that the chips are now 'so thin/airy' while others find them 'too thick'. The flavoring has also been reduced by about 50%, leading to a less intense taste. The transition from sunflower oil to canola oil reportedly began in 2024, and the company has assured consumers that the change will not affect the overall quality or taste of their products. Despite some initial concerns, the majority of chip lovers haven't noticed the switch. However, the price of potato chips has increased due to an ongoing potato shortage and associated issues, with an eight to ten percent increase in the price of Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages over the past year, and some claiming a closer 15 to 25 percent increase in snack food prices over the past two years. This aligns with the overall rise in grocery costs, causing financial strain for many Aussies. Despite these challenges, Red Rock Deli remains a popular choice, and some customers have turned to alternative brands like Aldi's Blackstone chips, which are similar but more affordable. The Thai Chill & Lime flavor, which has been discontinued at Woolworths, is still available at Coles and other retailers, providing a temporary solution for those who miss the original flavor.
