The NFL offseason is rarely marked by as many as ten head coach vacancies, making it even more surprising that the Pittsburgh Steelers are included in that list. This situation raises significant questions about how the league perceives the Steelers' coaching position—does it hold the same prestige as a head coach opening for a team like the Yankees or Lakers in their respective sports?
ESPN's Brooke Pryor reached out to several NFL executives and league insiders to explore their perspectives on the current status of the Steelers’ head coach role.
One knowledgeable source remarked to Pryor, "Coaches will be just as keen to interview the Steelers’ management as the team will be to evaluate them."
Although the Steelers have a long-standing reputation for stability in a league notorious for its high turnover rates, this doesn’t automatically place them at the top of every candidate's wish list. The franchise is facing numerous challenges, particularly considering they haven't secured a playoff victory in nearly a decade.
Key questions loom: Who will take on the quarterback position moving forward? What fate awaits veteran players who have been cornerstones of the Steelers' culture, such as Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt?
"There’s a lot of uncertainty awaiting whoever steps into this role," another source communicated to Pryor.
According to the annual NFLPA survey, the Steelers have consistently scored poorly in various categories, except for the coaching position itself. Now that aspect is no longer reliable. The organization’s subpar ratings regarding ownership, team environment, and facilities are now more significant than ever before.
One executive pointed out to Pryor that while these factors are typically more significant in college football than in the NFL, they still play a crucial role.
These ratings hint at the ownership's commitment to providing the necessary resources for success. Will the Steelers be willing to invest in an exceptional coaching staff, and will they heed any requests from the new coach regarding upgrades to the practice facilities?
“There are real concerns about the ownership’s dedication to spending money to modernize this traditional franchise,” wrote Pryor, echoing sentiments from an experienced coaching insider.
“They need to increase salaries.”
The source noted that while this job is better than many others in the NFL, the reality remains that football is fundamentally a business where financial incentives matter. Even if the Steelers are prepared to offer a lucrative salary to their next head coach, will they also be willing to make competitive offers for quality assistant coaches?
With four of the ten head coaching positions already filled, the Steelers find themselves competing with teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, both of which have established MVP quarterbacks. Additionally, they are up against the Las Vegas Raiders, who boast new facilities, guidance from Tom Brady, and the opportunity to secure the first overall draft pick to potentially select their next quarterback.
Some candidates might prioritize the chance to start with a clear quarterback strategy over the Steelers’ historical stability. The organization can’t depend solely on its legacy indefinitely, and the allure of that legacy may be diminishing.
As one league executive candidly shared with ESPN, "I genuinely believe the organization has fallen behind in terms of maintaining a modern operational approach within the NFL."
