A Blazing Concern: Fire's Rapid Spread Near Wellington Airport
A vegetation fire near Wellington Airport caused a significant concern, but firefighters swiftly contained the blaze. The fire, which started on a steep hill behind a pharmaceutical manufacturing business, spread quickly due to the southerly wind. Workers were evacuated just before 2 pm, and they returned to the building by 3 pm. Fire and Emergency (FENZ) Wellington District Commander Gareth Hughes stated that the cause of the fire is under investigation, and crews will remain to monitor any potential flare-ups.
The fire's rapid spread was attributed to the nature of fires on slopes, which can burn quickly up and across these steep areas. The large plume of smoke from the fire was visible across the airport and towards the southern suburbs. Four fire trucks and a command unit were on-site at Moa Point, with firefighters seen carrying hoses on the ridgeline. A spokesperson advised residents to close windows and doors and stay indoors if affected by the smoke.
The southern end of Stewart Duff Drive, where the fire was actively being tackled, was closed to the public. Police also closed the coastal road near Stewart Duff Drive, but it has since reopened. The fire did not occur on airport land, and flights continued as normal, according to an airport spokesperson. Wellington City Council confirmed that the fire was in scrub behind its sludge minimisation facility, with no injuries reported.
This incident highlights the importance of fire safety and the rapid response of emergency services in such situations. Residents and businesses in the area should remain vigilant and follow the advice of emergency services to ensure their safety.
