Amazon Prime Video Axes Beloved Animated Spin-Off After One Season
Streaming platforms constantly renew their lineups, and Amazon Prime Video is no exception. While the service hosts a roster of hit series that rivals Netflix and Disney+, it also faces the harsh reality that cancellations can come at any moment. This week, fans learned that a popular Prime animated spin-off has been canceled after its inaugural run.
The superhero genre continues to draw huge audiences, propelled by the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe phenomenon. That appetite helped fuel not only well-known franchises but also spin-offs that expand the universe. Yet even with strong momentum, a recent decision has left viewers surprised: one spin-off will not be returning for another season.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the project, streamers often reassess their slate to align with future plans. If a show doesn’t meet internal benchmarks, networks may discontinue it—even when fans adore it.
A report from The Wrap sheds light on the situation. Eric Kripke, co-creator of the animated series, offered insight into the decision:
“I don’t think there’s going to be a season 2 of ‘Diabolical,’” Kripke stated. He noted that the show’s audience metrics simply didn’t justify a renewal: “It’s not for lack of us pushing. I think ultimately the viewer numbers weren’t there to justify a second season, sadly. Although, we love it and Simon [Racioppa], the showrunner, would be game to do it, but we haven’t gotten a go ahead on that.”
As of now, Amazon Prime Video has not issued an official public statement about the cancellation. Kripke’s remarks, however, are read by many as a de facto confirmation that there won’t be a Season 2. Fans might feel disappointed, but there’s a silver lining: multiple live-action spin-offs from The Boys universe are still on the horizon, continuing to expand the franchise for interested viewers.
If you’re hoping to revisit the animated series, you can still stream the first season on Prime Video for the time being. For ongoing coverage about The Boys universe and related developments, keep an eye on ScreenGeek for the latest updates.
